How to Add a DVD Drive to a Laptop
- 1). Purchase a USB external DVD drive. These are available from many different manufacturers. If you plan to carry it around with you, look for a drive that is slim and lightweight for easy portability. Drives may be available from the manufacturer of your laptop to match the look of your computer.
- 2). Connect one end of the USB cable to the DVD drive. Attach the other end to an open USB port found on the side or back of the laptop.
- 3). Turn on the laptop. Wait for the "Found New Hardware" notification to pop up on the desktop. Most USB DVD drives are plug and play and will be ready to use immediately.
- 4). Install the software that came with the DVD drive by placing the disc in the drive. While the drive should function without the specific software, these drives often come with useful extras like DVD authoring and burning applications. Follow the installation wizard instructions to install the software.
