• As of 2010, most aftermarket GPS systems for cars weigh less than a pound and come with 3.5- or 4.3-inch screens. When comparing potential units, check the visibility of the screen at a distance of 1 to 2 feet. Test its touchscreen, and familiarize yourself with its menu system to see if they feel like you could use them with ease while on the road. Also examine the mounting equipment included, and determine whether or not it can be used in your vehicle. • Price is a determining factor for most when buying anything. GPS systems for cars can cost as little as $100 and as much as several thousand, depending on the features included and the way in which the device is going to be installed in your car or truck. • When comparing GPS units for you car, check the manufacturer's policy on map updates. New roads are constructed every week, and just as many fall into a state of disrepair. Having up-to-date maps can make the difference between a successful trip and one involving unexpected detours. Most GPS device manufacturers will provide one free map update with the purchase of your new unit. Subsequent updates can be costly, so shop around for a unit with the most reasonable policy on map updates.
