Instruction to Engrave Limestone Rock

    • 1). Draw the design that you want to engrave onto the limestone. Take care not to make the lines too close together. Limestone is very soft, and if you drill through the limestone close to another line, the stone could crumble, destroying the design. Try to keep all lines at least 1/4 inch apart, unless you want them to blend together.

    • 2). Attach a small drill bit to the flex shaft of the craft drill. Attach the shaft to the tip of the drill by screwing it into place. A small tip works best for limestone because the material is so soft.

    • 3). Put on all safety gear to protect your body while engraving. Limestone is very dusty because it is so soft, so it is important to wear a dust mask, eye protection and ear protection. The ear protection does not protect from dust, but it does protect your ears from the loud noise the craft drill makes.

    • 4). Turn on the drill and touch the engraving tip to the design edges. Slowly drill through the lines to make the engraved image. Do not press hard on the tip, or you could make the engraving too deep, which could crack or damage the surface of the limestone. Make the cuts about 1/8 inch deep.

    • 5). Use a soft brush to remove the dust from the engraving when finished.
