How to Install Interior Wood Balusters

    • 1). Cut the current balusters in half with a jigsaw. Outfit the jigsaw with a metal-cutting blade if the balusters are metal.

    • 2). Grab the bottom half of a baluster and wiggle it loose from the railing. Do the same for the top half. Repeat for all of the balusters.

    • 3). Set the tip of a chisel into the baluster hole. Tap lightly with a hammer to break up dried adhesive and any wood stuck in the hole. Pull out any nails or small pieces of debris with a pair of pliers. Repeat for each baluster hole in the top and bottom rails.

    • 4). Measure the distance from the top rail to the bottom -- including the depth of the holes that will house the balusters -- using a tape measure. Cut your new wood balusters to match your measurements, using a saw.

    • 5). Fill one of the bottom holes with wood glue. Insert the top of the baluster in the top hole, then slide the bottom of the baluster into the hole in the bottom rail, setting it in the glue. Check that the baluster is level. Repeat for each baluster. Let the glue dry according to the label directions.

    • 6). Apply wood glue into the space between the top rail and each wooden baluster. Let the glue dry.
