    Papier-Mache Ghosts

    • Make glue by stirring together equal parts of flour and water. Blow up a long balloon for each child. Have students help rip newspapers into thin strips. Have each student place a balloon in a bowl or bucket to stabilize it. Then have students dip newspaper strips into the glue, wipe off the excess, and place them on the balloon. Continue until the entire top part of the balloon is covered. Allow to dry overnight. The next day, pop and remove the balloon and paint the ghosts with white spray paint. Cut two holes for eyes.

    Jack-o'-Lantern Masks

    • Have each student draw a jack-o'-lantern face on the back of a paper plate. Have students cut out the mouth, nose and eyes. Color or paint the plates orange to look like pumpkins. Add lines (like longitude lines on a globe) in a darker orange color. Punch a hole on each side of the mask. Tie a length of green yarn to each hole. Glue several short pieces of green yarn to the top of the mask to make a stem.

    Mini Pumpkin Pies

    • Give each student a miniature graham cracker pie crust, a paper bowl and a spoon. Place two tablespoons of vanilla pudding and two tablespoons of canned pumpkin filling in each bowl. Invite students to stir the contents of their bowls until they are smooth and completely mixed. Demonstrate to students how to spoon the filling from their bowls into the pie crust. Pass around a tub of whipped topping and let each student put a dab on his or her pie.

    Pumpkin Patch Visit

    • Take the class to a pumpkin patch or another location where a large variety of pumpkins are for sale. Point out the different shapes, colors and sizes. Allow the group to pick out two or three pumpkins to purchase. Take the pumpkins back to the classroom and set up a Pumpkin Science Center. Carve the tops off the pumpkins and let students remove the seeds and inspect the flesh. Explain that pumpkins are members of the gourd family. Invite students to draw designs for jack-o'-lantern faces. Transfer the best designs to the pumpkins and carve.
