Dangers of Daily Shower Cleaners

    Respiratory Dangers

    • Many household cleaners contain chemicals that can cause respiratory irritation in sensitive individuals, and these chemicals may be present in some daily shower cleaning products. Bleach, ammonia and fragrances, both natural and synthetic, can cause adverse respiratory reactions by themselves, and some chemicals may interact with each other to produce irritating fumes. Most natural shower cleaners are made without harsh chemical cleaning agents, but some contain synthetic fragrances.

    Eye and Skin Dangers

    • Many cleaning products contain corrosive chemicals that can cause serious harm if they come into contact with eyes or skin, and nearly all cleaning agents can cause eye and skin irritation in individuals with allergies or sensitive skin. The chemicals in daily shower cleaners tend to be mild, often consisting of isopropanol or ethanol, and are not likely to cause severe reactions. Some brands claim that their products rarely cause problems even in users with allergies.

    Environmental Concerns

    • Whenever a cleaner is flushed down the drain on a daily basis, its impact on the environment is a concern. Surfactants from a class of chemicals called alkylphenol ethoxylates, phosphates and petroleum-based chemicals are all harmful to the environment when released into the water supply, and all of these chemicals are sometimes used in cleaning products. Many brands of daily shower cleaners, such as Seventh Generation, Method and Ecos, specifically avoid using these and other harmful chemicals in their products.

    Shower Damage

    • A cleaner used on a surface every day has the potential to cause significant damage to the surface over time. Daily shower cleaners are typically mild and will not harm most shower surfaces when used as directed. Most cleaners are safe for use on tile, porcelain, fiberglass, acrylic, glass, fabric and vinyl shower curtains. Daily shower cleaners should not be used on marble or other natural stone.
