Troubleshooting SD Cards for Digital Cameras

    • 1). Eject the SD card from your digital camera and look at the rear of the device. SD cards have a small write-protection slot that prevents data from being saved to the card when it is slipped up. Push this slot down to unlock the card if the protection slot is on.

    • 2). Clean the metal connecting prongs on the bottom of the SD card with a damp cloth. If finger prints or dirt are on the metal connection point, the data is not going to reach the card from the digital camera.

    • 3). Insert the SD card into the digital camera and power on the device. Choose the playback option and delete any images you no longer want to keep. If the SD card is full, no additional pictures can be stored on it. After images are removed, you can begin saving data to the card again, if the problem was a full card.

    • 4). Format the SD card. When you first purchase the card, it typically needs to be formatted. If it is not formatted, the camera might not save images to the card. Connect an SD card reader to your computer, then insert the SD card into the card slot. Open "My Computer" and right-click the removable device icon. Select "Format" and then click "OK" when the format window opens. The computer now formats the card. When the formatting finishes, the device is ready for use on your digital camera.
