How to Change the Memory on a Dell XPS M140 Laptop
- 1). Log out of the operating system and turn off the computer. Close the display. Unplug the AC adapter and network cable. Turn off any attached peripheral devices. Wait 20 seconds, then disconnect the peripheral devices from the laptop.
- 2). Carry the laptop over to a clean, well-lit work surface. Turn the laptop over and rotate it until the rear edge is facing you.
- 3). Find the installed battery module, located on the rear edge. Slide the latch located next to the module, then pull the module towards you until it comes free of the computer.
- 1). Remove the two screws installed inside of the battery bay. Return the laptop to its upright position and open the display. Find the hinge cover, located above the keyboard and under the display. Inspect the right edge of the hinge cover and locate the indentation.
- 2). Insert the tip of the pry tool into the indentation. Pry the hinge cover free of the laptop's base, starting with the right side of the cover and working your way left.
- 3). Inspect the left and right sides of the palmrest and locate the keyboard retention tabs. Use the pry tool to work the keyboard free of the tabs. Lift the keyboard up slightly and locate the cable attached to its underside. Trace the cable to its connector on the system board. Open the latch on the connector and pull the cable free. Set the keyboard aside.
- 4). Locate the small, rectangular memory module cover installed above the system board. Remove the two screws securing the cover in place. Remove the cover and push apart the clips on the sides of the installed memory module. Slide the module free and insert the replacement module in its place. Push down on the top edge of the module until the clips engage.
- 5). Reinstall the memory module cover and the previously-removed screws. Reconnect the keyboard's cable to the system board and engage the latch on the connector. Insert the tabs on the bottom edge of the keyboard into the slots along the palm rest. Push down on the edges of keyboard until it snaps into place. Reinstall the hinge cover and push down on it until it snaps into place.
- 1). Find the small, rectangular memory module cover, located on the underside of the laptop, next to the battery release latch. Loosen the screws securing the cover in place, then lift the cover free and set it aside.
- 2). Push apart the clips securing the edges of the installed memory module in place. Remove the installed memory module and insert the new module in its place. Push down on the top edge of the module until the clips engage.
- 3). Reinstall the memory module cover. Tighten the attached screws to secure the cover to the base.
