Qualities Students Need in a Laptop

    Processor

    • The processor is probably the most important part of a laptop because it determines how fast the computer can display information and how many applications it can run at once. The ideal processor is one bearing the Intel or Advanced Micro Devices logo that has at least 1 GB of RAM. Suggested processors include the AMD Turion 64 X2, Intel Core Duo and Intel Core 2 Duo.

    Memory

    • The amount of memory a student's laptop should have largely depends on what the student is studying. Those in computer-intensive classes that deal with such things as video editing, graphic design or audio editing will need a hard drive with plenty of space for programs and saved work. Look for laptops with at least 200 GB of storage for this situation. If the student will be using the laptop for less technical applications, like browsing the Web or word processing, look for one with at least 100 GB of storage.

    Operating System

    • It's very important that the operating system be up-to-date, because many classes will require students to use recent versions of such popular programs as the Microsoft Office Suite and the Adobe Creative Suite. If the laptop's operating system is more than two generations behind the programs being used, chances are the programs will not work, which can hamper a student's ability to install and use the required software.
