How do I Replace a Pile Weatherstrip on Old Windows?

    • 1). Remove the existing worn weatherstripping. You should be able to pull one edge along the window base up, then easily pull the rest out of its channel. If your window has a crimped channel rising, pry the channel apart slightly and carefully with a putty knife, then pull the stripping out.

    • 2). Measure the diameter of the window with a tape measure where you need to apply the weatherstripping. This is typically along the base, or along the base and sides. Add a foot or two to this measurement to compensate for any error, then order or purchase new pile weatherstripping.

    • 3). Peel adhesive tape off of the backing if you purchased the adhesive type, then set the strip end into the corner and press down.

    • 4). Push the remaining stripping into the channel with your finger using slight pressure until you've covered the entire area to be weatherstripped.

    • 5). Pinch your channel rising shut if applicable using pliers. Close and open the window to ensure that the stripping works and stays in place.
