The Canon PowerShot SX10 IS was Canon's only 20x optical zoom camera released in the United States as of 2008. Smaller than most digital single-lens reflex (SLR) cameras, but with a more powerful zoom lens built in, the SX10 IS is a great camera for advanced photographers and novices alike. For the average point-and-shoot consumer, however, the larger size of the SX10 IS will likely be the first thing noticed. Because the SX10 IS is such a large, powerful camera, it is important to have the right accessories to protect and maximize your experience with your new investment. - The PowerShot SX10 IS comes with all of the most basic required accessories in the box. A lens cap and a lens hood are included, as is the neck strap. While neck straps may seem cheesy or touristy, it is highly recommended that you wear one with this camera, as it is much heavier than an ultra-compact camera and will help protect your investment. The camera also comes with an A/V cable to connect it to an external display, and a USB cable to connect with your computer for uploading and editing images. The camera also comes with four AA batteries for power.
- Almost all digital cameras come with either built in memory or a small memory card included in the box. The SX10 IS is an exception to this, so be sure to buy a memory card before you're ever tempted to start taking photographs. While the camera does support lots of different memory card formats, the most common types it will accept are SD and SDHC. Cards with 2 gigabytes should suffice for all of your still image memory needs, and 4 gigabytes is recommended if you plan to shoot a lot of video.
- Whether you are storing your camera in a closet or carrying it on your shoulder, it is safest when protected by a carrying case. You can find compatible cases online or take the camera into a local camera shop and try on different sizes. Take into consideration how much of a beating you will give your camera; if it goes with you everywhere and takes knocks and bumps regularly, pick up a case with a lot of padding. Also, consider if you want room to store any accessories like additional batteries, the lens hood, lens cleaner or extra memory cards. Some cases have accessory pockets galore and others will be more suitable for just the camera.
