    • 1). Use a light, but warm color palette. Include colors in the yellow family like gold and orange or complementary shades of brown. Select pieces of furniture and accent pieces to highlight the color selections.

    • 2). Accentuate natural light with artificial lighting elements. Place artificial light sources near seating areas, such as one on each accent table and infuse the area with light with recessed halogen lights or a track lighting system. Make use of soffits, and install indirect lighting behind these architectural features.

    • 3). Arrange a group of furniture in a way that invites people to come inside. Keep at least one large piece or a smaller grouping facing the entrance and avoid placing the backs of the seating toward the entrance. Choose furniture styles that lend themselves to lounging, rather than a stiff or formal look. Complete the immediate seating area with an area rug with a decorative, colorful pattern that invites those who enter to come and sit.

    • 4). Use tall plants like palms and ficus trees to accent areas to enhance the warm and welcoming feeling of walk-out basements. Use artificial plants in basements that receive little to no natural light.
