    • 1). Wind the end of one of your copper wires around the positive lead on the 9-volt. Do the same with another wire on the negative lead and tape the wire in place. The positive lead shouldn't require any tape.

    • 2). Wrap the end of a copper wire around the thinnest part of the fork, just behind the part with the tines. The fork is your electrode. You want a solid coil where each wrap-around touches the ones directly above and below it.

    • 3). Repeat the previous step (Step 2) with the other wire and the other fork. Wrapping the wire in this manner forms a coil around your electrode, which maximizes the area of the conductor exposed to water. You can tape both

    • 4). Fill your glass with water and stir in about 3 tablespoons of salt. The salt is an electrolyte, meaning it makes the water conduct electricity more efficiently.

    • 5). Place both forks into the water. Make sure that the wires and forks do not touch anywhere. If you've done everything correctly, you will notice small bubbles forming on the coil of wire attached to the negative lead. This is the hydrogen being separated out.
