How Can You be Grateful For a Life You Absolutely Hate?
When one discusses the ideas behind the Law of Attraction, being grateful for what you have, what you've experienced and where you now are, it has a lot to do with your overall chances of success.
But how can you be grateful when things are at their darkest? How can a mother who has lost a child get down on her knees and thank God for the time she did get to share with him?How does a young woman appreciate the news that she has cancer? How does a rape victim look fondly upon her traumatic experience? I'm of the opinion, and it may differ a bit from other experts, that being grateful is not about celebration or even a reflection on what has happened to you in life.
Being grateful is the idea that we as human beings are unique in the Universe.
The unfathomable complexity of our being should be not only appreciated but held in awe as well.
Bad things are going to happen in your life.
With any luck, these things will not be devastating and you can look at them as minor setbacks and most often, the results of your own actions.
When this isn't the case, and your life has been shaped by circumstances out of your control, you must look back to the most precious gift you have ever been given and realize that it far outweighs in ever lasting significance the dark clouds currently enveloping your life.
We have been given the gift of not just life, but of thought...
of understanding.
We can reason and reflect and this very fact is why we so often hurt.
I walked out of a hospital one day as the emergency medical technicians were wheeling in a man who had lost his leg in an automobile accident.
I could hear his cries over the sirens and the audible sobbing of "Oh my God, not my leg!" I went back into the hospital and spoke with his mother restlessly pacing in the waiting room.
She told me he played football in college.
He wasn't a star or even did he have dreams of a future in the NFL, but he had so much passion for the sport that even though he was undersized and lacked elite strength, he had earned a scholarship to college by sheer determination and persistence alone.
Even as she spoke of his strength and determination in achieving the seemingly impossible, she lamented on his bleak future and utter hopelessness now that he had lost his leg.
"He would rather have been killed in that accident than to live with the knowledge he will never play football again.
"She said sadly.
I never spoke to her son, so I don't know that to be exactly what he was thinking, but human nature as it is, I'd say it's a safe bet.
As I was leaving the hospital again, I saw a dog hopping along in the parking lot chasing an old hamburger wrapper.
Believe it or not, he was missing a leg.
I don't believe it was by accident that he was there.
I myself was visibly shaken by what I had seen in the emergency room and needed a reminder that the price we pay for the gift of a brain that can think and reason, is that sometimes we are not always going to be content or numb to circumstance.
The dog seemed to be acting as all dogs do and though I'm sure missing a leg made chasing that wrapper a little more difficult, he was still chasing that wrapper and hadn't given up on life.
I mean, at least outside of Hollywood, we don't see a ton of pet psychologist in the phonebook, do we? We can choose how we respond to things that happen and should be grateful for it.
I think most of us would agree that if we had the option to go through life as animals do or have the ability to think, reason and feel, most would choose the latter.
With this in mind, I want you to be grateful for what God has trusted us with.
You do not need to look at your current situation specifically and thank God for it.
But you should thank Him for the ability to have these feelings because without them we could never experience joy, happiness or love.
Be grateful for being human and to have the choice about how you respond to certain things.
This is where your feelings of gratitude should be focused.
Think of this daily andyou will be well on your way to having the Law of Attraction manifest itself into your life.
