How do I Troubleshoot & Change a Fluorescent Light?
- 1). Check your home fuse box for any tripped breakers or blown fuses.
- 2). Check the light fitting to see if the fluorescent tube is loose. Hold the tube gently and rotate it back and forth slightly to see if the light comes on. Inspect the tube for discoloration near either end. If it is darkened, the tube may need to be replaced.
- 3). Remove the tube by rotating the ends slightly and sliding it out of the fixture. If you have two tubes side by side, test the flickering one in the second slot. Slide the tube into the slot and rotate until the two prongs are locked into place. This test will let you know if it is the tube or the fixture causing the problem.
- 4). Check to see if the unit has a starter. Most fixtures less than 20 years old do not have them. The starter is a small gray metallic cylinder that plugs into a socket on the fixture's frame. Look for the starter beneath the tube as well. Press in and turn counterclockwise to remove the starter. It is difficult to troubleshoot a starter, so replacing it may be the best option.
- 5). If all else fails, check the ballast. Turn the switch to the "off" position on the wall. Unscrew the ballast plate and remove the ballast beneath the tube. Purchase an identical ballast at a lighting or hardware store. Replace the ballast and ballast cover. Replace the tube and flip the switch.
