    General Information

    • The Sweda food dehydrator is based on the premise of removing the moisture from the food item, thereby allowing the food to keep from spoiling for a much longer period of time. The food also often condenses in size, making it easier to carry for travel and for excursions such as hiking, camping and other outdoor activities where food preparation space is limited.

    Health

    • The process of drying food slows down the production of enzymes in the food and also reduces the capability of bacteria, mold and yeast to grow in the food. This allows the food to last for a longer period of time and may also be a healthy alternative to other food that is processed and filled with preservatives in order to last.

    Food

    • Almost any food can be dried in the Sweda food dehydrator. Note that foods that are high in moisture, such as fruit, will take longer than other items with less moisture, such as meat or fish. Cutting the food into small pieces will result in the most consistent results and will help keep the food in easy-to-carry sizes. Examples of food commonly used in a dehydrator include corn, apples, beef, tomatoes, herbs, apricots and fish.

    Process

    • Slice the food into pieces that are approximately 1/4 inch thick and 1 or 2 inches in size. Set the food on the Sweda dehydrator tray in a single layer. Set the tray inside the dehydrator and close the lid. Select a higher temperature for two or three hours and then turn the heat down for a few more hours. The exact time of food dehydration will depend upon the type of food being dehydrated. Turn off and unplug the unit when finished, and store the food in resealable bags or storage containers.
