How to Tune a Guitar Using a Mic

104 5
    • 1). Go to a website such as A Guitar Tuner or Seventh String (see Resources).

    • 2). Plug a microphone into your computer. You can use a microphone made specifically for the computer, or you can purchase an adaptor that will allow you to hook up a regular microphone into your computer. Your computer's microphone input may have a picture of a microphone or a label like "mic" or "audio." If your computer has a built-in microphone, you won't have to plug an additional microphone in.

    • 3). Turn your speakers on.

    • 4). Pluck the high E string of your guitar. The display on the website will tell you which pitch is being played. If the pitch is too low, tighten the tuning key gradually. If the pitch is higher than E, loosen the tuning key slightly. Continue to make slight adjustments in the string's tension until the frequency on the website shows that the string is playing a high E that is not sharp or flat.

    • 5). Repeat this process for the rest of the strings, which should be tuned to B, G, D, A and low E (from high to low).
