How a Butterfly Can Have a Drastic Affect on How You Play the Guitar!

In the scientific community, there is a theory known as "the butterfly effect.
" You may be familiar with the movie of the same name.
Now, I can't speak to the implications of the movie.
That's another story.
But the science behind the theory? Well, that is another matter! The concept is based on the Chaos Theory, and was first published (at least as from what I can tell) by Jacques Hadamard in 1890.
Even Ray Radbury wrote a short story based on this principle.
Okay - So you are asking.
What in the world IS this concept, and what in heavens name does this have to do with playing the guitar? Good questions! Let me address the first one.
The concept is that the flapping of the wings of a butterfly in one part of the world can have DRASTIC ramifications in another part of the world.
The theory is that the tiny changes in the atmosphere from the wing flapping might alter the wind to the degree that it could (ever so slightly) alter the path of a hurricane or tornado which is farther away.
Perhaps change the wind current "just" enough to delay, or even stop the natural disaster from happening at all! Or maybe help create one to happen! Now, the butterfly doesn't actually create or stop the huge events.
But - at least according to the theory - it is an integral part of the creation of the events.
Or to put another way.
if the butterfly didn't flap it's wings, then the ramifications wouldn't happen.
The point is that just a SMALL change up front can have a PROFOUND change later down the road.
Now do you see the connection with guitar playing? For years I tried to find the 'silver bullet' to drastically improve my guitar playing.
Something BIG that wold make a HUGE impact.
I didn't find it.
Then one day.
someone showed me how to hold the pick differently.
It wasn't like a 'big deal.
' it was just 'hey, Steve! Why don't you try holding the pick this way?" That ONE simple change COMPLETELY and PERMANENTLY altered my guitar playing.
Forever.
I progresses more in the 6 months after I learned that picking technique than I did in the prior TWENTY YEARS! No joke.
I sometimes wonder how much of a better guitar player would I be if I learned that simple technique up front? That's what I discovered about the butterfly technique.
Making a small change in the beginning can have a PROFOUND impact on your life down the road.
I then started to learn as much as I could about these 'little things' that I noticed guitar players were doing differently than me.
For instance, I learned that the length of the guitar strap can have an ENORMOUS impact on playing live! Incredible! So if you are looking to make huge changes in your guitar playing or even in your life! Don't burn yourself out trying to make big changes and look for that silver bullet like I did.
Sometimes a small change, up front, can DRASTICALLY improve your guitar playing down the road! Peace.
