One word everybody should use on a scale is the Mum word.
When you say Mum, it relaxes your larynx, also known as the voice box or the Adam's apple.
When your voice box goes up, it sort of chokes your entire voice; however, this word is able to keep that larynx of yours in a neutral position despite the times you go higher in your range.
So, try saying Mum in a dopey sound without having to force it out or sing it; simply say it on a scale.
-Stretching Stretching is a great way to help your singing.
When you stretch out your body, more airflow is able to take place inside of your body and is less tensed and much more relaxed.
