How to Make Ruffled Quilt Binding
- 1). Measure and cut the fabric for the ruffle to the desired width plus 1 inch. The length is determined by the edge you need to cover and how loose or tight you make the gathers of your ruffle.
- 2). Fold one long edge over ¼ inch and both short edges over ¼ inch to the wrong side of the fabric and iron flat.
- 3). Sew the folded edges down then fold these edges over again onto themselves, iron flat and stitch to secure the hem. You now have a strip of fabric with three finished edges.
- 4). Lay the raw edge of the fabric on your machine on the 5/8 seam line. Leave a long tail of thread thread and stitch a row of gathering stitches down the edge, leave a long tail on the other end.
- 5). Repeat with another row of stitches right under the first row using the pressure foot as a guide. Leave long thread tails on both ends of the fabric strip.
- 6). Gather the fabric strip by holding the four tail ends of the thread on one side of the fabric and gently pulling the top two tails from the other side of the fabric. The more you pull the thread and push the fabric together the fuller your ruffle will be.
- 7). Cut the bias binding to your desired length plus 1 inch for turning a finished edge.
- 8). Open up the bias binding strips, notice that the raw edges are folded into the center creating finished edges on either side. Leave those pieces folded into the center but iron the strip flat.
- 9). Fold the ends of the bias strip over ¼ inch, iron, turn over again and stitch down for a finished edge.
- 10
Pin the ruffle to one strip of bias tape. Align the long gathered edge of the fabric strip with the bottom part of the bias strip that is folded in to the center. - 11
Stitch the bias strip to the ruffle close to the edge. - 12
Lay the ruffled strip on your work surface with the bias biding down and the raw edge of the ruffle exposed. - 13
Pin another strip of bias binding over the ruffle, sandwiching the ruffle between the two strips of bias binding. Align the tops of the bias strips when pinning to create a clean line. - 14
Sew the top bias strip to the ruffle close to the edge of the bias strip. Double stitch to secure.
