How to Set Up a Rain Tarp in Camp

    • 1). Spread the rain tarp on the ground. Position the tarp in the approximate location where it will be set up. Look for objects, like trees, poles, posts and corners of a camper, that may be used to support the corners of the tarp a sufficient distance off the ground. Attempt to position the tarp an equal distance from the support objects.

    • 2). Tie a length of rope or strap to the corners of the rain tarp. Use a double overhand stopper knot and tie the rope or straps to the corner grommets of the tarp. Make sure there is enough rope or strap to reach the intended corner supports.

    • 3). Secure one of the corners to a support object by tying another double overhand stopper knot. Make sure to leave enough of the rope between the support object and the tarp so that the tarp is equally positioned between the four supports. Position the tarp a sufficient distance from the ground to allow activity.

    • 4). Secure the corner opposite of the one that was first tied. Wrap the rope or strap around the support and secure with another double overhand stopper knot. Make sure to pull the tarp tight and attach at a position so that the tarp will be level.

    • 5). Attach the remaining corners to their respective supports. Tie the last two corners so that they are 12 inches or so lower than the first two corners. This will allow water to drain from the tarp instead of accumulating in the middle and possibly causing collapse.
