How to Reduce Moisture in a Crawlspace
- 1). Air out the crawlspace. For minor moisture problems, regulate by simply opening the doors to the crawlspace on a dry day and letting it air out during daylight hours. If you can open any windows in or near the space that can shed light on it, do so, as sunlight well help the process of water evaporation.
- 2). Run fans. Set up several house fans inside and at the edge of the crawlspace. Point the fans so that the air is blowing out of the crawlspace in order to pull damp air from the moist area and project it outward.
- 3). Use a silica gel desiccant. For small crawlspaces or cramped, extra-damp parts of a larger space, place several large packets of silica gel desiccant. Spread them out as much as possible for maximum effect.
- 4). Run a space heater near the crawlspace. If the weather is cold enough to use a heater anyway, and if you can give the heater adequate space to run without risking a fire by having it too close to a wall, space heaters will dry the air around them. (Do not use if the crawlspace has standing water or is dripping wet, as this creates an electrical hazard.)
- 5). Purchase and use a dehumidifier. If your crawlspace needs to be dried on a regular basis, use an electronic dehumidifier to pull moisture from the air. Find a dehumidifier at hardware or home-improvement stores.
