How to Crochet Flat & Round Doilies
- 1). Choose a pattern that is easy for you to read and understand. There are patterns with full diagrams that are harder to follow if you are new to crochet. A pattern with row by row instructions will be the easiest to use for your first attempt at crocheting a doily. It is important to be able to read crochet abbreviations when working on the project. For instance, a double crochet, more often than not, is listed as 1dc, sc is single crochet, and slst or ss is a slip stitch. Choose the crochet cotton and the correct size crochet hook for the pattern.
- 2). Begin the doily that you have chosen by making the first chain stitches. Join with a slip stitch to form a ring. Crochet the number and type of stitches into the ring as directed by the pattern. The stitches will be the first row or round of the doily.
- 3). Crochet the next row and count each stitch to be sure your work is accurate. It can take awhile to get used to the smaller crochet hook which produces fine, tiny stitches.
- 4). Lay the doily on a flat surface after completing each row to check for any mistakes. You must unravel a row with a mistake in it and start it over again.
- 5). Insert the hook through the doily and into the top of the crochet cotton ball when you are ready to set it aside for a break. It can take many hours of work to crochet a doily. Store the cotton and doily-in-progress in a bag or container to protect your work from being unraveled.
- 6). Finish the round or flat crochet doily by cutting the cotton about one inch long after securely knotting it into the doily. Use the hook to weave the loose crochet cotton strand into the doily to hide it.
