How to Change a Jeep Liberty Transmission Filter
- 1). Lift the front of the Liberty up on a pair of jack stands when it is parked on a level surface. Wait 30 minutes until the engine is cool. Test to see if it's cool enough to work on by placing a hand on the engine hood: it should feel cool to the touch.
- 2). Go underneath the vehicle and find the transmission drain pan in the center of the engine. The drain pan is a tank surrounded by eight bolts. Put a collection pan underneath the drain pan to catch transmission fluid.
- 3). Take out all but one of the bolts using the 1/2 inch socket wrench and allow the pan to drain until it is dripping slowly. Remove the last bolt and lower the remaining fluid into the collection pan.
- 4). Remove the three bolts fastening the filter beneath the drain pan with the 3/8 inch socket wrench. Pull the filter off and put the new filter in its place. Attach the filter using the old bolts. Replace the drain pan and lower the Liberty from the jack stands.
- 5). Open the hood and pull out the yellow transmission dipstick. Place a funnel into the tube and pour in 3 quarts of transmission fluid. Close the hood.
