How To Grow Queen Palms in Containers
- 1). Fill the container -- large enough that the root ball of your queen palm fits inside it comfortably -- with palm potting mix until it's halfway full. Palm potting mix contains the ingredients palms need to flourish, with a median pH soil level that's acidic. Palms need acidic soil and in fact decline in an alkaline soil, or soil with a high pH level. If you don't have palm potting mix, you can add sand and peat moss to your potting soil. This promotes drainage and creates the right acidity.
- 2). Uncover the root ball, being careful not to disturb the soil on the root ball. Greenhouses and nurseries generally wrap the root ball in material such as burlap to protect it before planting.
- 3). Place the palm inside the container. Cover the root ball with more palm potting mix. Tamp down the soil gently with a shovel and add more soil until it reaches an inch below the rim of the container.
- 4). Water the soil, completely saturating the area. Water the tree once a week several weeks, then less, while ensuring the soil remains moist until the palm is established.
- 5). Apply nitrogen-rich fertilizer to the soil about two months after planting, when you see new leaves appear. Fertilize a few times only during the growing season from the spring until September or October when the weather begins to cool slightly.
