Flaxseed meal is produced from the seeds of the blue-flowered flax plant. The seeds are ground to release the oils and sometimes labeled flaxseed meal. Whole flaxseed should be ground before using. Flaxseed has several health benefits as a source of omega-3 fatty acids. The taste of flaxseed is pleasantly nutty. It blends with other flavors and won't overpower a dish. Use flaxseed in baking, cooking and in drinks. - Start your day off with a fruity, frosty breakfast smoothie. Blend 2 tbsp. of flaxseed with 1 cup of orange juice, 1/2 cup of fresh fruit, 1/2 cup of yogurt and three or four ice cubes. Blend until smooth and serve immediately.
- Amp up your coffee break by turning a regular cup of hot coffee into a healthier gourmet coffee drink. Add 1 tbsp. of flax meal plus 1 tbsp. each of chocolate syrup and cream. You could use half and half or even skim milk in place of the cream. Stir and sip. Hazelnut is a flavor choice for many coffee lovers. The nutty flavor of the flaxseeds goes well with the hazelnut. Stir these coffee drinks as you drink them.
- Add 1 or 2 tbsp. of flax meal to any hot soups that you sip, such as tomato, mushroom or a cream soup like celery or chicken. Create a tempting cold creamy avocado soup for a hot summer's day. Place the flesh of a peeled avocado in the blender with 1/2 cup of cold chicken broth, four or five ice cubes, the juice of a lime, a sprinkle of garlic salt, 2 tbsp. of flax meal and a few drops of hot sauce.
- Keep your energy level high with a vegetable and flaxseed drink. Add the flaxseed to tomato or vegetable juice. Jazz it up by adding 1/2 tsp. each of celery seed and Worcestershire sauce with a squeeze of lemon juice for a twist on a bloody Mary. If you have a juicer, juice three carrots, two apples and a beet. Combine with 1 or 2 tbsp. of flaxseed meal. Beet gives the drink a rich red color and adds a bit of tang.
