    • 1). Burn the Hamai kerosene heater until the wick is completely dry and then wait for the device to cool completely. Lift out the fuel tank and set it aside. Remove the batteries from the back of the unit, and take out the levers in the front access panel.

    • 2). Open the grille and lift out the catalytic converter and set it aside in a safe location. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the cabinet screws and set them side. Lift the base forward and then up to remove.

    • 3). Remove the ignition unit screws and the wing nuts that hold the wick adjuster assembly. The wing nuts can usually be removed by hand. Lift out the wick adjuster assembly. Note where the wick is to be removed and then fold it in and slide it out carefully, avoiding the needles that hold the wick in place.

    • 4). Fold the new wick and slide it into the sleeve with the black line on the wick above the sleeve. Smooth it out and slide it into position over the needles. Slide the wick and sleeve onto the draft tube and press hard to ensure the needles hold it in place but the wick can move easily around the draft tube.

    • 5). Position the wick adjuster knob on the shaft and lower the shut-off or tip-over switch fully. Turn the knob three-quarters of a turn clockwise and hold down the latch while inserting the pinion inside the wick raising shaft. Slowly lower the unit onto the base and then return the wing nuts to position.

    • 6). Lift up on the wick and tighten the wing nuts. The wick should have 3/8 inch showing, with a uniform gap between the wick holder and draft tube. Adjust the wing nuts as needed and then tighten the wing nuts.

    • 7). Remove the wick adjuster knob. Reassemble the screws and the igniter. Lower the cabinet over the base, tilting it toward the front, and connect firmly. Reinstall the screws and restore the wick raising knob and levers on the front.

    • 8). Raise the wick no more than ½ inch and then shut the device off to verify that the wick retracts down inside the tube. Adjust as necessary. Open the grille and replace the catalytic converter and the fuel tank. Wait 30 minutes before lighting the unit.
