How to Applique Baby Clothing

    • 1). Sketch desired item or drawing on paper, and transfer this drawing onto the wrong side of your selected fabric by clipping it to the paper-backed adhesive iron-on and cutting both materials on the line of your sketch.

    • 2). Remove original sketch paper and iron the fusible paper-backed adhesive onto the WRONG SIDE of the fabric. Now your fabric will be bonded to the line of your sketch. Cut fabric along the lines of your sketch on the paper backing and removed adhesive paper cover so that the fabric will adhere to the material on one side.

    • 3). Place the fabric cut-out in desired location on the item to which it will be applied and iron in place. Using water-soluble pen, draw basic lines for any details you wish to add.

    • 4). Cut a piece of tear-away interfacing to reinforce the applique from the back. The piece of interfacing should border the applique by about 1/2 of an inch and should be pinned on the wrong side of the fabric.

    • 5). Flip fabric and applique so that it is face-up and adjust sewing machine to desired stitch-style. Make sure the interfacing is securely pinned on the backside of the applique and that it covers the outline of the applique. Sew along lines of applique.

    • 6). Snip threads and flip material over to the wrong side. Detach interfacing using a finger or rounded object--using sharp objects may cause holes in your applique. This tear-away stabilizer allows the back of your applique to be soft against a baby's skin.
