How to Create a Focal Point When Designing a Room
- 1). Hang an eye-catching piece of art on a wall. A large picture or print with bold colors is a way to create a focal point in the room. Hang it on a wall that is comparable in size. If you do not have access to this type of art, an oriental wall hanging, an armoire, or a flat-screen television also will suffice.
- 2). Place an area rug on the floor to help create a focal space. This rug should be relatively large, as your furniture will be placed on it. Although the color and style will vary depending on your own preferences, it is a good idea to keep it in a neutral tone so it does not compete with the focal point.
- 3). Put the furniture on the area rug. The larger pieces of furniture such as the sofa and chairs should be placed first. They shape the room. The smaller pieces of furniture should be added afterward.
- 4). Arrange the furniture so that when you are seated, your eyes naturally rest on the focal point. Also, the seating should promote conversation and allow people to face each other.
- 5). Add side tables next to each seat. They should be level with and next to the arms of the chair or sofa. This creates a true focal space.
