SD cards, by virtue of the fact that they are so small, are eminently versatile.
Developed for use in portable devices, such as mobile phones, gaming devices like Nintendo DS, and digital cameras and camcorders, their thumbnail size allows manufacturers to produce miniature lightweight products that would have been inconceivable ten years ago.
It is, therefore, not surprising that so many manufacturers are now adopting SD card technology for use in evermore product ranges.
Essentially, their popularity has earned them 'industry standard' status, with over 400 companies worldwide producing devices that use the cards.
They have even made their way into the realms of laptop computers, being broadly used in the diminutive netbook that first hit the market back in 2007.
SD cards slot neatly into internal ports within these devices, remaining extremely well protected whilst in use, thereby providing a safe way of saving data.
They are in themselves a non-volitile memory card, which is why they have earned themselves the name 'SD' (secure data), again making them tremendously reliable.
The capacity of the cards is impressive, although the 1GB, 2GB and 4GB are presently the most commonly used out of the range.
Nevertheless, the SDHC (secure data high capacity) has a maximum capacity of 32GB and the SDXC (secure data extended capacity) goes up to 2TB in size.
However, many of the older devices in use are unable to accommodate these new cards as changes have been made to the interface.
The fact that these cards are now capable of containing more data than many of the internal drives of standard computers produced only a few years ago means that the SD card is incredibly revolutionary.
Their use with hand held computers is probably only the beginning of their invasion of the computer market, threatening other portable memory formats such as the memory stick.
