How to Remove the Grips on a Yamaha Road Star
- 1). Loosen the bolts attaching the clutch lever perch and the front brake master cylinder to the handlebar using a 10-mm and 8-mm socket attached to a socket wrench. Slide both components away from the hand grips.
- 2). Unscrew the bolts from the bottoms of the left and right handlebar switch pods with a Phillips screwdriver. Pull the left switch pod off of the handlebar.
- 3). Pull the right switch pod apart to access the throttle tube and its hand grip. Pull the throttle cables off of the throttle tube, then pull the right switch pod away from the handlebar.
- 4). Insert a flat screwdriver between the left hand grip and the handlebar. Pry a small section of the grip off of the handlebar. Blow compressed air into the gap between the grip and the handlebar using a blow gun. Work the screwdriver from side to side to loosen the grip until it can be pushed off of the handlebar. Remove the right hand grip from the throttle tube following the same method.
- 5). Remove any remaining adhesive or hand grip particles from the handlebar and the throttle tube using 80-grit sandpaper.
