    • 1). Measure the dimensions of your kitchen island to determine the appropriate size of the countertop. Follow the shape of the top of your island cabinet and allow about 2 to 3 inches for the overhang.

    • 2). Purchase a countertop the appropriate size. You can buy a ready-made, custom countertop, buy a piece of countertop and ask the staff at your home improvement store to cut it to size for you, or buy the material and cut it yourself using an electric saw.

    • 3). Lay the countertop on the kitchen island and place a level on it to check that it is perfectly horizontal. Move the countertop around until you're satisfied with its placement.

    • 4). Adhere your countertop sections together, if you use more than one piece of material, with silicone caulking. Apply the silicone caulking to the edge of a countertop section and push it against the adjoining section.

    • 5). Apply construction adhesive to the top edges of the kitchen island cabinet and place the countertop on it. Let the adhesive dry overnight.

    • 6). Drill pilot holes through the braces at the top corners of the kitchen island cabinet and the parts of the bottom of the cabinet directly on top of it. Drive screws through these pilot holes to secure the countertop in place.
