Performance Anxiety - Getting Over Stage Fright

Does the thought of speaking in front of a crowd give you jitters? Do you feel nauseated when you have to do anything involving an audience? How do you get over performance anxiety? Performance anxiety, more commonly known as "stage fright", is something we've all experienced.
After all, who forgets the first time you had to stand on a make-shift stage to perform a pre-school version of Silent Night in sheep costume? However, contrary to popular belief, stage fright is not something everyone gets over after kindergarten.
In fact, many adults today still struggle against different forms of stage fright.
Paralyzed with fear about giving a presentation at work? Nervous about your solo part for the school musical? Performing a original composition to music bigwigs? Here are some tips to help you get over stage fright and exude cool confidence to your audience.
  1. Remember that you've done your best to prepare.
    Remind yourself that you've done everything in your power to make sure you give a good performance.
    You've practiced as hard as you could.
    Now, all you have to do is let it go.
    So, go ahead.
    Take a deep breath and let it go.
  • Focus.
    • When you're onstage, don't look around to see whether the audience is texting, whispering to each other, tapping their feet or looking at their watches.
      Pick a spot at the back of the room to focus your eyes on.
      Or if you're giving a speech, pick a couple of friendly faces who seem to be listening to you.
      Zone everything else out and concentrate on your performance.
  • Enjoy!
    • Finally, let loose and enjoy! An audience can smell nervousness and will respond negatively if you seem unsure.
      Enjoy what you're doing on stage, be crazy about it.
      If the audience sees how much you love what you're doing, they'll pay attention.
