How to Make a Chick Sound on Hi Hat

    • 1). Remove the top hi hat cymbal from the hi hat stand.

    • 2). Tighten the washers on the hi hat clutch -- the contraption that holds the top hi hat cymbal -- so they're as tight as possible.

    • 3). Place the top hi hat cymbal back on the hi hat stand, and tighten it to the rod at the spot on the rod you normally like the top hi hat cymbal.

    • 4). Press down on the hi hat foot pedal, so the two hi hat cymbals are clutched together tightly.

    • 5). Hit the edge of the hi hat cymbals, using a drumstick, at a spot about 2 or 3 inches down from the top of the drumstick. The combination of the very tight hi hat cymbals and where you're hitting the cymbals creates the "chick" sound.
