How to Connect a Starter to a Mercury Boat Motor
- 1). Remove the nut from the negative battery post with a 5/16-inch open-end wrench and remove the negative ground cable from the post.
- 2). Press down on the release at the back of the motor to remove the engine's cover. Position the starter motor onto the starter mounting brackets on the power-head. Thread the retaining bolts into the bracket, connecting the grounding cable under the upper-right bolt and tighten the mounting bolts.
- 3). Slide the vinyl "boots" that will cover the connections back on the wire, so that you can make a firm connection between the terminal on the wire and the terminal on the starter motor. Reconnect the wires from the solenoid to the starter.
- 4). Spray the connections between the starter and solenoid with a spray vinyl electrical insulation after pushing the connectors onto the terminals. Replace the L-shaped vinyl boots over the connections.
- 5). Replace the negative ground cable on the battery post. Thread the nut onto the post and tighten with a 5/16-inch wrench.
