How to Build an Outboard Stand
- 1). Measure the thickness of your boat's transom with a measuring tape. This is how thick the "carrier" portion of your outboard stand--the part to which you'll mount the motor--will be.
- 2). Measure the width and height--the height from the ground while your boat is on its trailer--of your outboard's motor mount. Transfer these dimensions to the marine plywood and cut the marine plywood with a saw to form the "carrier." Since the motor mount will be probably be thicker than the thickness of a single sheet of marine plywood, you will probably need to cut more than one piece with these dimensions. Depending on the dimensions of your motor's motor mount, you may be able to cut all the pieces for the carrier from a single sheet of plywood. Cut two pieces of the two-by-four lumber to the height of the motor mount.
- 3). Match up the edges of the parts of the carrier and use the wood screws and carpenter's adhesive to screw/glue them together to form a single unit the thickness of the motor mount. Attach the newly sawed two-by-fours along the sides of the "plywood sandwich" with screws and carpenter's adhesive. Set woodworker's bar clamps or parallel clamps across the face of the plywood and over the two-by-fours attached to the the sides of the "sandwich." Tighten the clamps and allow the glue to dry completely.
- 4). Have your assistant hold the plywood carrier up to the mounting plate of the automotive engine stand. Drill 1/2 inch through the bolt holes on the mounting plate of the engine stand and into the plywood.
- 5). Slip the 3-inch bolts through the engine stand mounting plate and the holes in the plywood carrier. Thread the nuts onto the bolts. Tighten the nuts with a wrench.
