How to Replace the Start Switch on a Kenmore Dryer
- 1). Disconnect your Kenmore dryer from the electrical outlet.
- 2). Remove the start switch knob. Loop a piece of string behind the knob and pull the string toward you. This will cause the knob to pop off of the start switch's post.
- 3). Open the control panel. To open the control panel on most Kenmore dryers, use your fingers to pop off the plastic end caps on the control panel. Remove the two Phillips screws holding the control panel in place, and rotate the control panel toward the back of the dryer. If you have an older Kenmore model, there will likely be an access panel behind the control panel that must be removed to access the inside of the control panel. Remove the screws holding the access panel in place and set the access panel aside.
- 4). Press in on the start switch's retaining tabs to release the switch. Slide the switch out of its mounting hole.
- 5). Disconnect the wires from the start switch by sliding them off of the contact posts on the switch. Make a note of where the wires are connected so you can easily attach them to the new switch.
- 6). Connect the wires to your new start switch. Slide the start switch back into the opening in the control panel and press down until the retaining tabs lock into place. Rotate the control panel back down and replace the screws and end caps, or replace the rear access panel.
- 7). Slide the control knob back onto the start switch's post and press down until it snaps into place. Plug the dryer back into the electrical outlet and turn it on to test the switch.
