    • 1). Cut a wooden block that is one inch thick so that it is one inch wide by six inches long. It does not matter which type of wood you use for this project. Use a table saw to cut the wood to size.

    • 2). Drill a quarter-inch hole in the center of the one-inch thickness of the block, one inch from one end of the six-inch length of the block. Repeat this step on the opposite end of the block.

    • 3). Drill a quarter-inch hole in the center of the one-inch width of the block, three inches from one of the ends of the six-inch length of the block.

    • 4). Thread a four-inch length of thick, black string through each of the holes on the thick part of the block, and a 12-inch length of the same string into the hole at the center of the width of the block.

    • 5). Thread the four-inch lengths of string through two holes on one edge of a gong that is four inches in diameter. Gongs with pre-drilled holes on one end of them can be purchased online or at a local artisan shop. Tie the string using a simple knot.

    • 6). Tie the 12-inch length of string to the post, or hook, from which you want to hang the gong chime.

    • 7). Drill a quarter-inch hole into the end of a four-inch-long gong stick (not padded), with which to hit the gong. This gong stick can be purchased along with the gong. If you purchase a gong stick with a hole in it, you can skip this step.

    • 8). Thread a 12-inch length of thick string through the hole on the gong stick, and tie the string from a hook, or post, about half an inch away from the gong. Use a simple knot to tie the gong stick. When the wind blows, it will blow the gong stick into the gong, causing the gong to ring like a wind chime.
