    • 1). Turn the key in the ignition of your Marquis and attempt to start the car. Listen to any noises that the car is making. If there is a clicking noise, but the engine does not crank, the culprit may be a faulty starter. If the engine starts and then dies after making a knocking noise, you will want to check your fuel pump.

    • 2). Turn key to "On" position, but do not crank the car. If interior lights or windshield wipers are operable, then the battery is functioning. If they are not functioning, the battery has been drained or has died. Replacing or recharge the battery.

    • 3). Check the fluids in the Marquis. Add a gallon of gas and attempt to restart the car. Although the Marquis does have a gauge that indicates how much fuel is left, it could be faulty. The Mercury's 4.6L V8 engine needs to have the oil changed at least every 3,000 miles for regular oil and 12,000 mile for synthetic. It also needs to be filled up to proper levels. If it is not, it can cause damage to the engine which can lead to it not starting.

    • 4). Remove spark plugs from the Mercury. The Marquis' spark plugs can last at least 50,000 miles. Disconnect the spark plug wire and hold the wire close to a metal surface. If there is no spark, then the spark plug is not firing properly and needs replacement.

    • 5). Replace your fuel filter. The fuel filter on a Marquis can become clogged. When this happens, the filter will cause your engine to shut down. This can lead to the car not starting and can also lead to additional engine damage.
