A centerpiece adds style to any room, from a waiting area in an office to a cozy living room. A centerpiece can even give an outdoor seating area a cohesive feel. Flowers are always popular centerpieces, but don't limit yourself to them, given the plethora of other cool centerpiece ideas available. - Create a tiny habitat to display on a table, exposing people to the wonders of nature even when they're indoors. Plant a desert scene with small cacti and rock formations made from stones found in the backyard. Or, create a wonderland filled with trees made from twigs spray painted in shiny colors and crystals used as rocks.
- A small water fountain adds a relaxing feel to a gathering, with its soothing tones creating a tranquil atmosphere. Plus, it adds natural beauty to the table, which you could accent by placing small plants on either side of it.
- Display art that your children made at school, or help them to create sculptures from clay or paper mache. As Disney's Family Fun website shows, kids can also create or help to make many other types of centerpieces like candle holders, candelabras and decorative containers, as well as placemats.
- Display an artistic piece of pottery or an arrangement of pieces in the center of the table. Stack several raku-fired cups or bowls for a casual look, as if you've just set them down for a moment. Or, choose an unusual, purposefully misshapen vase or bowl.
- Choose an elegant version of a classic game such as checkers, chess or mancala to use as a centerpiece. It will draw people together by giving them something fun to do.
- Place a selection of pretty stones in a bowl, with a larger stone in the center, in the center of your table. Choose less expensive but colorful natural stones like rose quartz. Place some around the base of the bowl as if they’ve tumbled out.
- Vary your centerpieces with each season to add flair to a room. Cornucopias are always popular in the fall, and for New Year's, you could place a themed party hat and whistles on the table. In the spring, use an artificial bird's nest with a mother bird sitting in it, and surround it with a wreath of spring flowers.
- Don't be afraid to think outside of the bowl. Divine Dinner Party.com notes that an elegant centerpiece running the length of a table will be sure to stand out instead of getting lost in the center. Place dried leaves and pine cones right on the tablecloth for a natural, understated elegance.
