How to Install a Shift Knob on a Jetta
- 1). Unscrew the shift knob. Grasp the knob and turn it counterclockwise until it comes off the top of the shift.
- 2). Unsnap the center console cover to release the boot. The boot is the piece that covers and protects the shift linkage. Pull the boot up and off the shift. Skip this step if you are only replacing the knob.
- 3). Install the new boot. The boot will be in the shape of a cone with a large hole at the bottom and a smaller hole at the top. With the small hole up, slide the boot over the shift. Pull the larger end of the boot down and seat it in the console. Check to make sure the boot covers the shift linkage completely.
- 4). Reattach the center console cover, making sure the bottom of the boot tucks into the cover before you snap it into place.
- 5). Screw the new knob onto the end of the shift. Turn the knob clockwise until it's tight.
