Although traces of snow still remain in most areas of the United States by mid March, the month generally symbolizes the beginning of spring and hence the growing season for most annuals and perennials. Most spring-blooming annuals emerge from the ground in March or April to brighten up the landscape after the dull and dreary winter. Several options of March and April blooming flowers exist that add a splash of vibrant color to the garden or container soil. - Snowdrops or milk flower (Galanthus nivalis) is one of the few early-season bloomers to spruce up the yard as early as mid to late February. The hardy bulb plant features 3- to 4-inch-long narrow foliage and white, 1-inch-long blooms that hang of a stem like a drop of milk. The perennial prefers full sunlight to partial shade and well-draining, humus-enriched soils in USDA hardiness zones 3 to 7.
- Also called African daisies, gerber or gerbera daisy (Gerbera jamesonii) is an attractive March-blooming flower of South African. Each flower features a large, disc-like center and two rings of petals in white, orange, red, pink, yellow and peach. Each bloom measures 3 to 5 inches in diameter and forms attractive cut flowers. The butterfly and hummingbird attractant grows as an annual or perennial depending on the climate of the area. It thrives in USDA hardiness zones 9 to 11 and prefers full sun to partial shade.
- Hardy pasque flower (Pulsatilla vulgaris) blooms as early as March to decorate the spot with its attractive color for up to three weeks. The low-growing flower features several stems that grow 6 to 8 inches off the ground and support individual blooms comprised of six to eight petals in white, red or lavender and bright yellow stamens. It prefers full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil.
- A hardy flowering perennial, sweet alyssum (Lobularia maritime) features clusters of small blooms from spring until fall. The easy-to-grow plant grows between 5 to 10 inches tall and tolerates a variety of soils provided it receives full sun to partial shade.
- Pansies are attractive, cheerful flowers that dress up a March and April garden or container. The low-growing, frost-tolerant, happy face-like annual comes in a variety of shades including green, blue and yellow. Although delicate in appearance, these hardy flowers push their way through the ground in spring and continue to add vibrant color to the area until temperatures rise. The easy-to-care annuals prefer slightly moist soils.
