How to Fix the Air Conditioner in a Lincoln Navigator
- 1). Disconnect the electrical connector for the compressor clutch cycling switch, located at the top of the accumulator/drier.
- 2). Detach the inlet-outlet lines. These lines may have threaded fittings that require a wrench, or they may have spring-lock couplings where you remove the metal clip and then disconnect the lines from the evaporator core tubes using special tools.
- 3). Unscrew and remove the nut on the mounting bracket and slide the accumulator/drier up and out of the bracket.
- 4). Drain the refrigerant oil from the old accumulator/drier into an unused measuring cup and add the oil plus an extra 2 ounces to the new accumulator.
- 5). Slide the accumulator drier into the mounting bracket and tighten its bolt slightly, allowing room to slide and turn the component for now.
- 6). Lubricate the O-rings for the inlet/outlet line connections using refrigerant oil and reconnect the lines.
- 7). Tighten the nut on the accumulator/drier and reconnect the electrical connector.
- 1). Raise the vehicle's front end and support it on jack stands.
- 2). Remove all of the drive belts from the engine, turning the tensioner with a wrench or breaker bar to relieve the tension. Remove the plastic air deflector panel that is beneath the radiator.
- 3). Unbolt and disconnect the refrigerant lines from the compressor using a wrench and disconnect the electrical connector at the compressor clutch.
- 4). Remove the compressor's mounting bolts and remove the compressor from its mounting location.
- 5). Drain the refrigerant oil into a measuring container and add it to the new compressor. If the amount is between 3 to 5 ounces, add an extra ounce. If it is less then 3 ounces, add 3 ounces.
- 6). Install the new compressor with its mounitng bolts and connect the electrical connector and refrigerant lines.
- 7). Reconnect the air-deflector panel, then reinstall the drive belts by turning the tensioner again, slipping the belt back on the pulleys and slowly releasing the tensioner on the belt.
- 8). Lower the vehicle off the jack stands.
- 1). Disconnect the battery cables (starting with the negative cable) by loosening their clamp nuts, then unbolt and remove the battery and battery tray.
- 2). Disconnect all sensors and hoses from the air cleaner assembly, loosaening the hose clamps with pliers or a screwdriver. Unbolt the air cleaner outlet tube, remove the air cleaner clamp, remove the air cleaner element and lift out the assembly's open end.
- 3). Unscrew and remove the plastic air deflector from the radiator, then disconnect the upper radiator hose. Disconnect the lower hose from the degas bottle, then unbolt and remove the bottle.
- 4). Unscrew the clutch nut for the cooling fan and shroud assembly using a fan wrench while holding the water pump pulley in place with the smaller included wrench. Unbolt the fan shroud with a flare nut wrench and lift the fan/shroud out.
- 5). Remove the mounting bolts and upper mounts for the radiator and lift the radiator out of the engine.
- 6). Disconnect the refrigerant lines to the condenser using two wrenches on the fittings.
- 7). Remove the mounting brackets/bolts and lift the condenser out of its cradle supports.
- 8). Pour 1 ounce of extra refrigerant oil into the condenser.
- 9). Install the replacement condenser into the cradle supports and apply the brackets/bolts. Connect the refrigerant lines.
- 10
Reinstall all other components in the reverse order of removal, including the radiator, degas bottle, cooling fan and shroud assembly and the air cleaner. - 11
Install the battery tray and battery and connect the battery cables, connecting the positive cable first.
