1

Turn off your Explorer's engine, engage its emergency break and remove the keys from the ignition. Make sure the headlamp switch is set to "OFF."
2

Step out of the vehicle and open the rear liftgate.
3

Remove the two bolts holding the tail lamp assembly to the rear pillar. Draw the assembly straight back from the pillar until it comes loose.
4

Find the bulb socket holding the broken bulb. Once you've found it, twist it counterclockwise and remove it from the assembly.
5

Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket and replace it with the new bulb.
6

Insert the bulb socket into the tail lamp assembly and turn it clockwise to secure its position.
7

Test the new bulb to make sure it works before screwing the assembly back onto the rear pillar and closing the liftgate.
