    • 1). Purchase corn gluten from your local hardware or gardening supply store.

    • 2). Locate the areas of your yard that are becoming overrun with weeds and undesirable grass. Because corn gluten needs to be applied to young sprouting weeds, you should hand pull these weeds or lift them up by the roots with a shovel.

    • 3). Spread corn gluten meal by using a spreader. You should apply 12 to 20 pounds of corn gluten every 1,000 square feet of yard space. Adjust the spreader, so it releases the correct amount.

    • 4). Water the area where the corn gluten was applied. Allow the corn gluten to dry out over the next couple of days for best results.

    • 5). Plant ornamental container grown plants after a few days within the corn gluten. Corn gluten contains a small amount of nitrogen, which will be beneficial to your plants' growth.

    • 6). Apply a second application of corn gluten between mid-August and mid-September using the steps above. You can rake the corn gluten in flowerbeds when killing competing weed vegetation.
