The History of the Breakaway Candy Bar

104 3

    Significance

    • According to a 2004 report by the Australian Confectionery Industry, Cadbury Schweppes Australia Limited holds a commanding lead---a 35 percent share---of the country's candy market. Half of the chocolate bar sales in the country can be traced to the company. Piggybacking on its success, Cadbury launched several new candy bar brands in Australia during the mid- to late-1990s and into the new millennium. Among them: Time Out and Trebor, both in 1995, and Yowie in 1997, as well as 24-7 in 2002. In its report, ACI said Cadbury furthered its leading position in the market because of the new brands.

    Features

    • Launched in 1999, Breakaway was a fifth candy bar to be launched by Cadbury within Australia. Described by the company as a "delicious and innovative product" on its website, Breakaway features layers of wafer and chocolate cream, topped off with dairy milk chocolate.

    Uses

    • Breakaway is sold in a block and, as the name suggests, can be broken apart into chunky, finger-shaped pieces. It is sold in a 220g package. Cadbury markets Breakaway as an ideal sweet treat that can be shared with family and friends over coffee or tea.

    Ingredients

    • Breakaway consists of 80 percent milk chocolate and 17 percent wafers. Key ingredients include full cream milk, sugar, vegetable fat, cocoa mass, cocoa butter, wheat flour, milk and cocoa powder. Like most candy bars, Breakaway is designed to be enjoyed in moderation. It is low in sodium and carbohydrates, but high in saturated fat and sugars.

    Corporate History

    • While Breakaway is a relatively new candy bar, its parent company---United Kingdom-based Cadbury Dairy Milk---has been manufacturing confections to several countries throughout the world since 1905. Products from Cadbury Dairy Milk generally contain high concentrations of cream milk, and advertisements emphasize it. Although it is popular in the United Kingdom and Australia, Cadbury's has a limited presence in the United States, where it is best known for chocolate Easter eggs. The Hershey's Company in Pennsylvania manufacturers Cadbury products in the United States.
