How to Replace a Window Sash Using a Full Frame Sash Kit
- 1). Cut the paint on your window trim stops, located on the window jambs around your window. Loosen the stops evenly with your pry bar, ensuring you do not break them, as they will be reused later. Remove the stops with the pry bar. Remove nails from back side of the trim; this ensures you do not damage the finish side of your window trim.
- 2). Raise the lower sash of your window and remove it from the window opening. Pull the lower sash in an outward angle gently to prevent damaging your casing trim. Cut your window sash cords--located on the top--with your cutting pliers, and remove the sash from the window opening. Repeat this process to remove the other sash portion.
- 3). Unscrew each pulley assembly located on each side of the window jambs. Remove the remaining track assembly from both sides of the window jamb. Remove the wooden access panel located toward the bottom of the jamb. Take off the sash weights from the inside of the jamb.
- 4). Stuff the window jamb's cavity--where you removed the sash weights--with fiberglass insulation and a yard stick to push the insulation toward the top of the jamb. Reinstall the window's access panel. Repeat for the other side of the window.
- 5). Install the jamb liner brackets to each side of the window jamb included with your sash kit, according to the manufacturer’s directions.
- 6). Snap the new track liners in place over the liner brackets on each window, according to the manufacturer’s directions. This provides a weather-tight seal for the upper and lower sashes.
- 7). Install the replacement sashes starting with the top sash first. You install the top first because it goes toward the outside of your window track, and the bottom sash goes toward the inside of your window track.
- 8). Reinstall the window stops with finishing nails.
