How to Clear a Memory Card
- 1). Consult your device's manual for formatting instructions. If you use the memory card exclusively in this one device, then formatting with the same device is preferable. If you can't find your manual, look through your device's menu or settings for a sub-menu devoted to the memory card, storage or formatting. Enter that sub-menu and choose to format the memory card. You can also delete files or format the memory card using your computer.
- 2). Insert your memory card into a card reader and attach it to your computer via an available USB port.
- 3). Open Windows Explorer via the pop-up windows or press the Windows key and E simultaneously. Click the drive letter corresponding to your memory stick. Press Ctrl and A simultaneously to select all files. Hold the Shift key and press the Delete key to delete the files. This method will not alter the drive structure, which also means it will not affect the card's function in your device.
- 4). Right-click the drive letter corresponding to the memory card and choose "Format." Deselect "Quick Format" to overwrite the data, instead of just marking the space available. This is more secure, if there is sensitive data on the memory card. All other options should remain as default, since the propagate based on the memory card's original structure. Click "Start" to format and clear the device. This method will still allow the memory card to work in most devices, but some devices are very sensitive and require formatting through the device itself.
