How to Fix a Hole in a Copper Air Conditioner Coil
- 1). Turn off the air conditioner and let the unit cool before patching the hole in the copper coil. Turn off the breaker powering the air conditioner to ensure there is no chance of being injured by electrical shock.
- 2). Put on rubber gloves and clean the copper air conditioner coil with steel wool and acetone. Let the acetone evaporate between 10 and 15 minutes.
- 3). Vigorously rub the leaking air conditioner copper coil with an emery cloth until the copper appears shinny.
- 4). Apply an acid-based and lead-free soldering flux to the copper air conditioner coil using a brush and then immediately ignite a hand-held propane torch and hold it a few inches away from the copper coil.
- 5). Wave the hand-held propane torch back and forth to heat the acid-based and lead-free soldering flux, then hold a line of silver solder between the torch and the copper coil. Let the silver solder drip onto the copper coil to fill the hole.
- 6). Remove the torch and turn it off, then allow the copper coil to cool for about 20 to 30 minutes before turning the breaker and air conditioner back on.
