How to Install an Electrical Panel Box
- 1). Learn about relevant codes by obtaining and understanding the current National Electrical Code (NEC) as well as local and building codes so that the electrical panel box you install complies with applicable ordinances.
- 2). Obtain an electrical panel box large enough to handle the amperage you are planning to distribute throughout the building. Also, be sure you have enough circuit breaker spaces available to accommodate future expansions. Typical electrical panel boxes will have a 200 or more amperage rating.
- 3). Obtain the required city permit to install your electrical panel box.
- 4). Disconnect your electrical service. In the event you have current service, be sure to have your utility company disconnect service at the transformer. You will also need to have them remove the old meter from the base.
- 5). Check and install. Once you have checked with your local city inspector about the correct placement of your electrical panel box, attach the electrical panel box either to studs or to 3/4-inch plywood backer.
